Dry Needling Geelong

Dry Needling at The Manx Myotherapy

Looking for dry needling in Geelong?

At The Manx Myotherapy, dry needling may be used as part of an individual treatment plan to help manage muscular pain, tension and restricted movement.

Rather than simply needling the area that hurts, your appointment starts with an assessment to understand your symptoms, movement and what may be contributing to the problem.

Where appropriate, dry needling can then be combined with hands-on myotherapy, massage, joint mobilisation and exercise as part of your overall treatment plan.

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling involves inserting a very fine, sterile needle into selected muscles or soft tissues.

The technique is commonly used by Myotherapists as part of the management of musculoskeletal pain and muscle-related symptoms.

The areas treated will depend on your symptoms and what we find during your assessment. Dry needling isn't automatically used in every appointment and we'll discuss whether it is appropriate for you before treatment.

What Can Dry Needling Be Used For?

Dry needling may form part of a broader treatment plan for a range of musculoskeletal presentations, including:

The important thing is that we're not treating a diagnosis or painful area with dry needling alone.

We'll assess what's happening first and determine whether dry needling is an appropriate option for you.

What Happens During Dry Needling?

Before any needles are used, we'll discuss your symptoms and perform an assessment.

If dry needling is appropriate, a fine sterile needle is inserted into the selected muscle or tissue.

Some people barely feel the needle entering the skin. When the targeted area is reached, you may experience a brief ache, twitch or cramping sensation.

We'll explain what we're doing throughout the treatment and you can ask us to stop at any point.

Afterwards, it's common for the treated area to feel temporarily tender or similar to the feeling after exercise.

Is Dry Needling the Same as Acupuncture?

Although both treatments use fine needles, dry needling and acupuncture are different approaches.

Dry needling at The Manx Myotherapy is used within a musculoskeletal assessment and treatment plan.

The areas we treat are selected based on your symptoms, movement, assessment findings and treatment goals.

It may be combined with other Myotherapy techniques and exercise rather than being used as a stand-alone treatment.

Dry Needling as Part of Your Treatment Plan

Dry needling isn't a quick fix and it isn't necessarily the right treatment for everybody.

Our aim is to understand what's contributing to your symptoms and choose treatment based on your individual presentation.

Depending on what we find, your appointment may also include:

  • Massage and soft tissue techniques

  • Joint mobilisation

  • Cupping

  • Movement and mobility work

  • Strengthening exercises

  • Advice around activity, training or work

This allows us to look beyond temporary symptom relief and develop a plan to help you return to the activities that matter to you.

Dry Needling for Sports & Running Injuries

Dry needling may also be incorporated into treatment for runners, cyclists, gym-goers and other active people experiencing muscular pain or tightness.

However, treatment isn't just about loosening a tight muscle.

We'll also consider your training load, strength, movement and the demands of your sport when developing your management plan.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dry Needling

Does Dry Needling Hurt?

We'll explain the procedure beforehand and check that you're comfortable throughout your treatment.

This can feel similar to post-exercise muscle soreness and generally settles.

We'll discuss what to expect and any relevant aftercare with you during your appointment.

How Many Dry Needling Sessions Will I Need?

There isn't a set number.

It depends on your symptoms, how long you've had them, your individual presentation and how you respond to treatment.

Dry needling is only one potential part of your management plan, so we may also use hands-on treatment, exercise and other strategies.

Can Dry Needling Be Combined With Massage or Myotherapy?

Yes.

At The Manx Myotherapy, dry needling can be incorporated into a broader Myotherapy treatment when appropriate.
